Menopause Skin Clinic

Women everywhere are welcoming the media’s ongoing attention to the menopause, highlighting the natural changes that a woman’s body goes through during this time. For many women the physical and emotional effects caused by the menopause impacts their daily life, however, each woman’s experience differs from one to another.

It is only when a woman has not had a period for 12 months is she at the point of menopause. The declining levels of oestrogen and progesterone in the female body are what leads a woman to menopause, which can take several years (known as perimenopause) and is the reason why it starts to function differently. The list of associated symptoms are wide ranging and varied, with common complaints ranging from brain fog and mood swings, to aches, pains and fatigue.

As well as these (and many others) the skin can also be impacted. Falling levels of oestrogen can speed up the rate at which collagen also declines – a natural occurrence during general ageing. In fact, it has been reported that after the menopause collage levels have reduced by up to 30% in the first 5 years. As a result of decreasing oestrogen and collagen, the skin’s protective barrier is compromised which can expedite existing skin concerns such as rosacea and eczema, as well as leading to other conditions, such as:

• Enhanced dryness – this happens because the oil glands become less active which can also affect the skin on the hands and scalp • Redness and inflammation • Accelerated signs of ageing – including lines and wrinkles and sagging skin • Oily skin and blocked pores – often due to hot flushes producing more sweat that builds up on the skin’s surface • Acne – a result of increased oil on the skin and blocked pores.

In the years that lead up to the menopause it is advisable to change up your skincare, and switch to a regime that suits mature skin. For most women perimenopause occurs some time in their 40’s which is often the best time to alter your skincare routine.

The team at Ambra Aesthetics in North Finchley have the knowledge and skills to improve the look and feel of the skin, no matter what your age or stage of adulthood. As well as helping many male and female patients with their individual skincare needs, our advice and range of products and treatments can also target the requirements of women who are affected by the menopause and perimenopause. Here’s what we recommend:

Daily cleansing – You should use a cleanser that is suitable for drier skin. A creamy cleanser will help to hydrate rather than strip the skin of moisture, like a gel or foamy product may do.

Maintain hydration – Use a heavier cream if your skin is particularly dry. Try to avoid a long, hot shower and moisturise the skin while it’s still a little damp.

Exfoliate regularly – We would still recommend twice weekly exfoliation. This not only helps to maintain clear pores, it can also help to fade age spots, by getting rid of dead skin cells.

Apply SPF – The skin becomes more vulnerable as it matures, so it’s important to maintain protection from the sun’s rays every day, all year round.

Use products that suit your skin type – a medical skin professional (such as the experts at Ambra Clinic) can suggest the best products to use, based on a thorough skin assessment. These can help to maintain and improve the quality and condition of the skin, as well as target any specific concerns. Ambra Clinic recommends Obagi Medical skincare products and their patients have experienced great results.

Booking a consultation at Ambra Clinic can put you in touch with one of our skin specialists who’ll examine your skin before giving you their expert advice. The look and feel of the skin is just one tiny aspect of the menopause experience, but with our help, a woman can maintain a complexion that is clear and glowing. Incredible skin often provides the foundation for an amazing appearance. So however, a woman may feel before and after the menopause, working with Ambra Clinic means not having to worry about the skin.
