Fungal Nail

Fungal nail infections often start as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail, gradually spreading deeper into the nail bed. As the infection progresses, the nail may become discoloured, thickened, brittle, and crumbly. In severe cases, the nail may detach from the nail bed or emit an unpleasant odour.

Aside from its unsightly appearance, fungal nail infections can cause discomfort, pain, and difficulty walking or wearing shoes. In some instances, it can also lead to secondary bacterial infections or contribute to self-consciousness and decreased self-esteem.

The primary causes of fungal nail infections include dermatophyte fungi, such as Trichophyton rubrum, which thrive in warm, moist environments such as swimming pools, gyms, and communal showers. Additionally, factors including poor foot hygiene, wearing tight-fitting shoes, trauma to the nail, weakened immune system, or pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or peripheral vascular disease can increase the risk of developing fungal nail infections.

Effective treatment typically involves antifungal medications, topical or oral, combined with good foot hygiene practices and preventive measures to reduce the risk of recurrence.

At Ambra Clinic we also provide laser therapy as a safe and effective solution to fungal nail infection. Our preferred device is Aerolase Neo which works by emitting concentrated beams of light that penetrate the nail and target the fungal organisms residing within the nail bed. The laser’s energy heats and destroys the fungal cells while leaving surrounding healthy tissue unharmed. This process effectively kills the fungi responsible for the infection, promoting the growth of healthy nail tissue. Multiple treatment sessions may be required to achieve optimal results, and individuals may experience improvement in nail appearance over several months as the new, unaffected nail grows out. Laser therapy offers a non-invasive and relatively painless alternative to traditional antifungal medications or surgical interventions.

Dr M and her team are all experts and really take care of you giving the best treatments and advice. Sam on the front desk is a dream. In lots of places the staff can look scary from doing too much but Ambra you can tell it’s all about discrete subtle tweakments. . Don’t hesitate to go!
