Why Am I Affected by Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition that can be quite common, affecting up to 10% of the population. It’s a chronic inflammatory skin condition that results in redness, blemishes and occasionally small pus-filled spots. It can also cause skin sensitivity and tiny blood vessels to form on and around the face. While the exact cause of rosacea is not known, it’s thought to be caused by a combination of hereditary and environmental factors.

What are the symptoms of rosacea?

The symptoms of rosacea can vary depending on the severity of the condition. For some people it’s only minor, occasional breakouts, but for others it can be painful and cause social embarrassment, as well as affecting daily activities. Common symptoms include flushing, small red bumps (papules) and pimples (pustules) on the face, neck and chest, watery eyes, a feeling of heat or tightness in the facial area and small swollen blood vessels on the face and nose.

What triggers a breakout of rosacea?

As there is no known cause for rosacea, it’s found that exposing the skin to a specific ‘trigger(s)’ is the reason for a breakout. Different triggers affect different people which may include one or more of the following: stress, sun and wind exposure, hot beverages, spicy foods and exercise (due to the rise in body temperature and the rush of blood to the face). Other factors can also aggravate the condition such as alcohol and certain cosmetics. It is important to try to identify and avoid anything that may trigger your flare ups to avoid a breakout.

Will rosacea go away?

While rosacea is not a life-threatening condition, it can be quite frustrating and often requires regular treatment to manage the symptoms and prevent further damage to the skin. In most cases the symptoms are mild and do not have a major impact on day to day life. However, for some people it can be more severe and require medication to control the inflammation and reduce the skin’s sensitivity. Treatment options can include antibiotics, prescription strength creams and lifestyle changes. It’s also important to avoid things that may irritate the skin such as extreme temperatures, spicy foods, alcohol, smoking and hot drinks.

At Ambra Clinic in North Finchley we take an individual approach to rosacea and recommend the best course of treatment for each separate case. In most instances, a targeted skincare protocol, specifically for rosacea is most effective in calming the skin and managing its symptoms. Obagi Medical is our chosen brand of skincare, and produces great results for our patients.
